Mell Lazarus died earlier this week at the age of 89. He created two famous cartoons, Miss Peach, which I don’t know much about, and Momma which has been a Sunday Morning Comic staple since 1970. Although I can’t prove it, Momma may very well have been the inspiration for Marie Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond. Lazarus was good enough to win the 1983 Reuben Award, given to the the best cartoonist. I am not sure we can put him in the pool but we’ll put him on the bubble. In the meantime, our condolences to Francis.
